Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/low starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

While it seems complicated at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing array of wagering options and seeing that you have many players trying for the high hand, along with several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha Hi-Lo.
