Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha hi/lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in nearly every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming array of wagering possibilities and because you have many players battling for the high hand, along with a few battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
